UN: The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is worse than in the 2006 war

“The humanitarian situation in Lebanon has reached a level that exceeds the severity of the situation during the 2006 war,” OCHA said in a statement.

“The situation has escalated again in recent days, with the Israeli army issuing evacuation orders from Baalbek and Nabatieh shortly before airstrikes targeting these areas,” OCHA said.

The residents’ suffering is compounded as “critical infrastructure, including health care, has been destroyed,” the statement said.

“Many hospitals are overburdened and report that they are pushing for blood donations to cope with the emergency flow,” OCHA said.

The current war between Israel and Hezbollah began on October 8 last year with rocket attacks carried out by Lebanese Shiite militias in support of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which had attacked Israel the previous day. , attacking Israel and the current Gaza War.

According to official information, nearly 3,000 people have been killed and another 13,300 injured in the war in Lebanon since then. The Ministry of Health does not differentiate between civilians and Hezbollah fighters in its data.

Around 180 small children and 600 women are also among the dead.

In its latest report, OCHA emphasizes that this war has affected more than 11,000 pregnant women, including 1,300 women who had to give birth in a health care system that is on the verge of collapse.

Imran Riza, Lebanon’s humanitarian coordinator, condemned the attacks on civilians and infrastructure, calling for an “immediate cessation of hostilities to protect the most vulnerable population”.
