A researcher at the Chemical Research Center of the National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN), Joddy Arya Laksmono Joddy Arya Laksmono said that plastic packaging is made up of different compounds, depending on the type of plastic and the purpose for which it is used. use
When plastic packaging is exposed to high temperatures, a number of health consequences can occur including the release of dangerous chemical compounds into the packaged food or drink. At high temperatures, plastic can release chemical substances such as BPA which, if dissolved in food, can disrupt the endocrine system.
“When you cook food by packaging, there are aspects that must be considered to ensure safety and prevent the risk of chemical contamination,” explained Joddy.
In plastic packaging made of PVC or polyvinyl chloride, high temperatures can release flatates that are known to disrupt hormonal balance and adversely affect reproductive health.
There is a risk that heated plastic also promotes the formation of dioxin. Dioxin is a carcinogen (cause of cancer) that is very dangerous for human health. Several studies show that chronic exposure to dioxin can increase the risk of cancer, especially cancer of the liver, skin and immune system.
Joddy said, there are several types of plastic packaging that are specifically designed for use in high temperature conditions. This packaging is made of plastic or other materials that are safe when heated and do not release dangerous compounds.
He reminded people not to use single-use plastic packaging, such as Styrofoam boxes, polystyrene containers, or regular plastic bags, as these items are not designed to heat up and can release dangerous chemicals. This packaging is only suitable for serving food cold or at room temperature.
“Cooking instant noodles without plastic and using equipment that is safe for health is highly recommended,” he said.
