New scandal in sight in F1? Red Bull suspects the McLaren team of putting water in its tires to improve performance!
The 2024 Formula 1 season takes an unexpected turn with new accusations of cheating between Red Bull and McLaren. During the Brazilian Grand Prix, Red Bull raised suspicions about the methods used by McLaren to optimize the performance of its tires in racing, prompting a swift response from the FIA.
According to Red Bull, McLaren has found a way to keep its tires at optimal temperatures by injecting small amounts of water into them. This technique would cool the tires, thus providing better handling and increased performance over long distances.
Red Bull says McLaren may not be the only team to use this method, which is strictly regulated by F1 regulations. Following these accusations, the FIA immediately opened an investigation and began verification procedures to ensure that the regulations are respected.
A season marked by accusations of cheating
The rivalry between Red Bull and McLaren has intensified as the season has progressed, with frequent exchanges of accusations from both sides. It all started during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Red Bull had already accused McLaren of using a flexible rear wing deemed non-compliant. In response, McLaren countered that Red Bull was manipulating the height of its car’s underbody to gain speed, an accusation that had also attracted the attention of the FIA.
Ultimately, the FIA ordered McLaren to modify its wing and determined that Red Bull’s device complied with the rules. However, tensions have continued to escalate, leading to this new round of tire allegations.
The FIA’s strict tire rules
The FIA imposes very strict rules on the use of tires in Formula 1. All handling is closely monitored by Pirelli technicians, who ensure compliance with the standards. In fact, the tires are fitted by Pirelli teams, and F1 teams no longer have the possibility of touching them once fitted. Injecting water discreetly would therefore be a major challenge, given the rigorous surveillance in the stands.
After each race, Pirelli collects and analyzes all the tires used. If traces of liquid were found in McLaren’s tires, it could confirm Red Bull’s suspicions, leading to sanctions.
A precedent known to Red Bull
Interestingly, Red Bull itself has experimented with this technique of adding fluid to tires in the past, before the FIA put in place rules banning the practice. This experience could explain the Austrian team’s distrust of McLaren’s performance.
The FIA remains attentive to Red Bull’s accusations and continues its checks. As for the fans, they hope that this battle for the title will remain above all a sporting confrontation, without a cheating scandal tainting this Formula 1 season.
