The Galeria Kaufhof branch in the heart of Berlin, on Alexanderplatz, was a central point for shopping and leisure for decades.
After numerous branches in the capital had to close in recent years, there was great fear that the department store on Alex would be next. Now the decision has been made. All customers need to sit up and take notice!
Galeria Kaufhof: Now there is certainty!
Bang! The end of Galeria Kaufhof on Alexanderplatz is a done deal. This emerges from a report in the “BZ” on Thursday (October 31st). This decision will particularly affect shopping fans.

According to information, the company will have to leave the building at the end of 2025 because there is no new rental agreement. The Senate had repeatedly emphasized that the Galeria Kaufhof branch on Alex would remain in place in order to save the many jobs. But nothing will come of it now.
What’s coming into the building now?
The owner of the property, Commerz Real, wants to extensively renovate the department store for at least two years from 2026. Galeria Kaufhof was offered the opportunity to move back in as a tenant afterwards – albeit in a significantly smaller area.
In recent weeks there have been considerations about the Central and State Library moving into the building on Alexanderplatz. The idea came from the owner of the building herself. Commerz Real AG is said to have already developed ideas on how the ZLB could be integrated into the location.
We have put together further news for you today:
While the building owners are said to be positive about ZLB using it, the department store group Galeria Kaufhof wanted to continue operating the location. Negotiations began at the beginning of October. With the result now known that the department store will no longer exist at Alex.
