Hoary Potter, an Oregon hairy bat, has been crowned this year’s winner in the Bureau of Land Management’s annual bat beauty contest in the United States.

In the last round of the competition, Hoary Potter beat Lestat Dwarf Brownwing. In addition to the duo, the Robert Battinson giant wing and the Honey Bunches long-eared wing advanced to the semi-final stage.

The beauty contest was organized on Halloween to celebrate the end of the International Bat Week.

The Bureau of Land Management is an agency of the US Department of the Interior that is responsible for the management of US federal lands. The agency has been organizing bat beauty contests on Halloween since 2019 to raise awareness of the importance of bats to the environment.

Agency wildlife technician Emma Bush says that bats play a key role in the environment because they eat insects and pollinate flowers and fruits.

– Bats suffer more and more often from the threats of habitat loss, diseases and light pollution. They are often misunderstood as carriers of scary diseases, says Busk, according to news agency AP.

The agency posted photos of this year’s beauty pageant candidates on Facebook and Instagram, and users voted for the cutest among them.

The agency says that bats are known for their fast flight skills and the way they wrap themselves in their own tails to hide from predators. Based on these qualities, it judged that beauty pageant winner Hoary Potter would be “the perfect candidate for the role of seeker in this year’s cheerleading squad.” It is a reference to the whistling game in the Harry Potter book series, where you fly with a broom.

The name Hoary Potter refers not only to the book wizard but also to the name of a species of bat. Karvalepakko is in English hoary bat.

The victory of the competition goes to the bat from Oregon for the third time in a row. Last year, the big-eared bat William ShakespEar took the title. In 2022, a canyon bat named Barbara was declared the winner.
