Recently, China granted codes to exported Vietnamese fresh coconuts. According to Nguyên Dinh Tùng, general manager of Vina T&T company, using good technology, the shelf life can be up to 70 days, helping to ensure optimal quality when they go on sale. Vina T&T has signed contracts with two Chinese companies and has also exported first containers to China, it said.

Every year, China consumes more than 4 billion coconuts, including approximately 2.6 billion fresh coconuts. Demand is huge but China’s production capacity is still limited. A great opportunity is thus offered to Vietnamese producers and exporters, underlined Hoang Trung, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, fresh coconut ranks 6th among fruits in terms of export turnover, after durian, dragon fruit, banana, mango, jackfruit. It is estimated that in the first 10 months of 2024, fresh coconut exports would have earned over USD 120 million.

With the new export protocols, many exporters are targeting this fruit. The sector is able to make a breakthrough in terms of exports.

Export Opportunities

According to Nguyên Dinh Tùng, Vietnamese coconuts have a competitive advantage in their quality. Since consumers around the world know that the quality of Vietnamese coconuts is not inferior to that of Thailand and other exporting countries, they tend to choose them.

Fresh Vietnamese coconuts are currently sought after by many export companies. Some have obtained contracts to export 30 to 40 containers until the end of 2024.

Nguyên Dinh Tùng particularly insisted on the need to choose superior quality products to present to foreign consumers, because they constitute the brand of a specific sector and, more generally, of a country.

Product quality can replace thousands of words in commercial offers, fresh coconuts are no exception, he stressed.
