Will you soon be able to cross the street when the light is red? This is what a pedestrian association is now demanding

The pedestrian association “Fuss eV” calls for pedestrians to be allowed to cross the street even when the traffic light is red. “If you feel safe, you look and go. If you want to rely on green, you wait as before,” said board member Roland Stimpel to the “Rheinische Post”. The model is the “Green Arrow” for drivers, which allows turning even when the light is red.
This breaks the taboo that you always have to stop when the light is red. Why should it then only apply to pedestrians who often stand on their feet at traffic lights?

A “green arrow” for free walking can be attached to pedestrian traffic lights where there is a good overview of the road. Until now, pedestrians in Germany have had to expect a fine of 5 euros if they cross the street when the light is red and are caught. If you cause an accident, the fine increases to 10 euros.
In 2023, the zebra crossing celebrated an anniversary: The white bars on the street are intended to make road traffic safer – and have been for 70 years.01.09.2023 | 5:12 minutes
Pedestrians are allowed to walk on red light in NYC
Crossing the street on a red light is now officially legal for pedestrians in New York. A corresponding City Council law came into effect after Mayor Eric Adams failed to veto it within the time allowed.
Accordingly, pedestrians in the metropolis are now allowed to cross streets whenever and wherever they want without risking a fine. Until now, so-called “jaywalking” was banned in New York. Anyone caught could face a fine of up to $300 (around 275 euros).
In reality, pedestrians almost never adhered to this. It was also very rare for the police to intervene.
