The Ministry of Health and Defense confirmed that new cases of yellow fever have been registered in six regions of the country, with a significant increase last week in the Tolima region. During this year, cases of yellow fever were identified in Putumayo (4), Caquetá (1), Huila (1), Nariño (1), Vaupés (1) and Tolima (7).

Yellow fever is a preventable disease through vaccination and regular use of preventive measures to avoid bites from the transmitted mosquito. It is vital that everyone, especially those living in high risk areas, get vaccinated as soon as possible. By implementing these measures, we not only protect ourselves, but also take care of the entire community,” said the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo.

According to the Ministry of Health “The vaccine is very effective, only one dose is needed for life to prevent this disease. It is important to note that it is effective 10 days after its application.”

On the other hand, the epidemiologist, Carlos Trillos, explains that it is to prevent the spread “Controlling the vector, that is, the mosquito, is very important. This should include avoiding breeding sites or water and waste deposits and external objects that can collect rainwater, especially near the house.”
