Nervous, feverish, over-the-top, minimalist, post-rock: The new album by Training feat. Ruth Goller comes in very different states.
T he saxophonist Johannes Schleiermacher and the drummer Max Andrzejewski are busy jazz free spirits who have made a name for themselves in the experimental scene. They already played together in the band Hütte, and in 2020 a new joint project was created: Training. A first collaboration album was created in 2021 with training guest John Dieterich (Deerhoof), and now they have decided on another album with the celebrated electric bassist Ruth Goals who are known from the London jazz scene.
There are very different types of music for “threads to knot“ was created: The opening piece “threadfin” initially features nervous, feverish, over-the-top free jazz, before drums, saxophone, bass and guitar move into almost meditative realms. “finback” sounds repetitive, minimalistic, post-rock; The bass and saxophone move around, the drums jump evenly, and the track stays in your ear.
The same applies in a different way to “logline”, which always returns to a comparatively catchy saxophone melody (in a varied form) and is accompanied by choral sounds. “Lineage” is based more on synthesizer patterns and comes across as more playful and twisted than other tracks. Then in “agelong” things become quieter again, bass, synthesizer and flute slowly come closer to each other in their interaction.
It is fitting that the trio refers to the method of cadavre exquis, which emerged in surrealism, in which new creations are created by chance and improvisation. This principle works perfectly. Training is worth it!
