Gas stoves proved to be particularly dangerous. Experts warn that the public is not sufficiently aware of the dangers of gas stoves. Using them shortens the life of people who cook on them by almost two years on average. According to experts, 36,031 premature deaths each year are from gas stoves in the EU and almost 4,000 in the UK.
The study only looked at the effects of nitrogen dioxide, not other gases such as carbon monoxide and benzene. Gas stoves release harmful substances that lead to inflammatory processes in the respiratory tract, BLITZ cites.
Every third household in the EU uses gas, and in the UK 54 percent. The percentage is even higher in some EU members such as Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and Hungary – over 60 percent.
The EU has tightened rules on outdoor air quality, but has not set standards for indoor air quality. The EU is also looking to phase out gas stoves and offer people money to make it easier to switch to a healthier option.
