According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the USA and Russia are not far from armed conflict. “Our countries are on the brink of a direct military conflict,” Lavrov told the Turkish newspaper “Hürriyet” (Friday edition) just a few days before the US presidential election, without elaborating. He accused the incumbent US President Joe Biden of having fueled the “Russia fear” in the USA.
Asked about next week’s US presidential election, Lavrov said it would make little difference to Russia, regardless of the outcome. “We have no preference.” The Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump approved the “highest number of anti-Russian sanctions” during his term in office compared to his predecessors, Lavrov argued. “No matter who wins the elections, we do not believe that the anti-Russian stance of the United States will change.”
Putin praises Trump as “honest”
Although Trump has expressed goodwill toward Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past, the two men are not close and have an ambivalent relationship.
Last week, Putin said his relationship with Washington would depend on how the United States performs after the election. He welcomed Trump’s “honest” statements about his desire to end the war in Ukraine.
In September, the US company Microsoft claimed that Russian agents had increased their disinformation operations to denigrate the campaign of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris with conspiracy videos. This had raised concerns about foreign interference in the November 5 presidential election.
