Mayor Van Oosterhout: ‘The Schoonebeek family received support in May’

An assistance program was started at the end of May after an incident involving the family from Schoonebeek, whose mother was stabbed to death in Hardenberg last Tuesday. Eric van Oosterhout, the mayor of Emmen, wrote this in a letter to the city council. The suspect in the case is the woman’s ex-partner.

The police, the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the mayor and the emergency services received reports of an incident at the end of May. “Immediately after that, an aid program was started. Privacy protocols and rules mean that the city, the police and the Public Prosecution Service do not receive information about the content.” It is not clear what kind of event it was at the end of May.

From Schoonebeek the town was told that the suspect tried to set fire to a house. It is not clear whether this relates to what happened at the end of May.

This is the first time Van Oosterhout has responded to the tragedy. He was replaced by deputy mayor Raymond Wanders last week.

Tonnie’s four children said in a statement that they were barely able to comprehend their mother’s death. “Last Tuesday the worst thing imaginable happened; our mother Tonnie is no longer with us. The events of the past few days are unreal and very emotional.”
