SYRIZA is proceeding with the presidential election amid a civil war atmosphere after yesterday’s decision by the Political Secretariat which validated the four candidacies of Pavlos Polakis, Sokratis Famellou, Nikolas Farandouris and Apostolos Gletsou and confirmed that there is no candidacy for Stefanos Kasselakis.
In conditions of poll collapse (also 6.5% was recorded a few days ago) and essentially returning to 2009 percentages around the 5-6% zone, SYRIZA is trying to convey a message that it is politically alive. Except that the living political reality shows that it is now a party in a deep existential crisis.
On one side is the new majority that excludes St.. Kasselakis from the election process with the most serious characterizations as was seen yesterday with the decision of the General Assembly.
On the other hand, the excluded St. Kasselakis insists (against last night) that he will be a candidate at the conference that will decide on the nominations as he emphasizes and calls on his supporters to go to the polls this weekend for the election of congressmen.
Kasselakis’ last paper before the conference
So the three-day conference of November 8-10 is considered the battle of battles with St. Kasselakis playing his last card there.
Everything will depend on how many delegates, who will be elected this coming weekend of November 2-3, will be under his influence.
If the correlations are in his favor, he will fight it in the congress with the slogan, “in the congress, the Democracy fights back”.
Of course, the current majority of 87 insists that the decision of the Central Committee is final and does not change, and therefore he is not a candidate.
The climate is particularly tense and the 87 insist that he is preparing a party (in fact they say another building, another register, another party and even a car, some of these references that were also in the PG decision) and is now openly contradicting with SYRIZA.
St. Kasselakis insists that he is a candidate for president and with him he also has the majority of the Ethics Committee (including the Disciplinary Committee) which emphasizes that the conference will decide who will be a candidate for the elections on November 24 and if necessary a second round on December 1.
The reflection on “87”
The armies are lined up for the great battle of the conference, although there are still voices within the 87 who raise questions about the choice to exclude Kasselakis from the elections, while there was also the opinion that the conference did not gain ground to decide on the nominations.
In this belligerent climate, there is still a significant number of executives who believe that with the current situation, there should be another nomination and they should be declared by the conference.
Is there a prospect for SYRIZA?
As the situation is today with the atmosphere that exists no matter what there is no prospect of unity the next day. On the contrary: the split is just around the corner.
And the question is what perspective does it have and what role can it play in the political game of a party that is literally collapsing.
Frustration reigns and what emerges is an organizational, non-political battle that alienates the majority of voters.
And this is disastrous for SYRIZA.
