Climate, the hottest topics and expectations on the results of the next COP29 conference in Azerbaijan

ROMA – The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the UN Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November – we read on the website of the CeSPI – the international political study center created by Enrico Berlinguer to contribute to the renewal of the culture and international vision of the then Italian Communist Party – is looming as a crucial event for tackling the climate crisis.

The objectives and priority focus. Key objectives include increasing ambition in mitigation, adaptation and climate finance, accompanied by concrete measures. A priority focus will be a new annual financial target of $1 trillion to support developing countries, a significant challenge given the failure to meet the previous commitment of $100 billion. COP29 will also discuss the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on carbon markets and the review of NDCs to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C.

Differences in emphasis and priorities within the EU. The context is complex, marked by crises of multilateralism and US elections, which will influence global commitments and cooperation. In a climate of uncertainty and suspension, an important role on the COP29 climate agenda, as always, could be played by the EU, whose approach has often been characterized by a commitment to ambitious climate action, financial solidarity and solid international cooperation. It should be borne in mind that there are, however, also significant differences in emphasis and priorities between EU Member States in addressing the global climate crisis.
