Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian city of Fortaleza (capital of the state of Ceará, in the northeast) will be the only state capital governed by the Workers’ Party (PT), of the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, following the result of the runoff of the municipal elections on Sunday, which confirmed an advance of the right throughout the country.
According to the official count, the PT candidate, Evandro Leitão, obtained 50.38 percent of the votes, compared to 49.62 percent for André Fernandes, the far-right candidate supported by former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). ).
Fortaleza was one of the few cities where there was a direct confrontation between a candidate from the PT and one from the Liberal Party (PL), Bolsonaro’s formation, and the dispute was very close, with the left winning by less than 11 thousand votes in one city. with 2.4 million inhabitants.
For the Brazilian left, the extreme right conquering Fortaleza was an especially dramatic possibility, because it is one of the main cities in the northeast, which has historically been a breadbasket of votes for Lula, but where recently the opposition to the left is advancing. with force.
Of the 26 state capitals that were at stake in these municipal elections, the PT will only govern in Fortaleza, despite being the party that is in Government, which predicts difficulties for the left in the face of the 2026 general elections.
In most cities the mayors are from a spectrum that goes from the center to the extreme right, with some exceptions such as Recife (capital of Pernambuco, northeast), which was already in the hands of the Socialist Party of Brazil (PSB) in the first round. , a center-left formation allied with the central government.
