New York Satellite images from the United States (USA) reveals an unusual phenomenon in the form of clouds of ‘sea fog’ appearing in Antarctica.

The Landsat 8 satellite from the US Geological Survey (USGS) developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recorded unusual atmospheric phenomena on the Pine Island Glacier, Antarctica.

This amazing image taken on October 10 shows a clear sky as two atmospheric phenomena appear.

It shows sea mist forming on the edges of glaciers and snow drifts blown by strong winds from the Antarctic interior to the coast.

“These images are unique, showing the power of the wind,” Christopher Shuman, a glaciologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Maryland, said in a statement as reported by Newsweek, Friday (1/11 /2024).

Sea mist or a steam-like phenomenon that rises from a hot cup of coffee on a cold morning, is created through the interaction between ice, water and air.

As winds push water and sea ice away from the face of the glacier, warm water rises from below.

When this relatively ‘warm’ water meets the cold Antarctic air, it produces an amazing condensation effect.

It then creates small ice crystals that look like wands of smoke rising from the surface of the water.
