San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chis. The Salvadoran writer Roque Dalton, murdered by his fellow guerrillas almost half a century ago, still “resonates, which proves his stature as a poet,” said historian Héctor Lindo Fuentes, professor emeritus of history at Fordhamen University in New York. York, United States.
“Roque is definitely an extremely prominent figure in national literature. “As a historian, I find it very interesting that much of his work is a very deep reflection on the history of El Salvador,” he added.
Interviewed in San Cristóbal, he pointed out that Dalton, author of Poor little poet that I wasamong other works, “he was interested in the past and used it to reflect on the present. Also, very well said, with that poetic language that has resisted the onslaught of time.”
Roque was born on May 14, 1935 and was assassinated on May 10, 1975 by his comrades from the People’s Revolutionary Army (ERP), one of the five guerrilla organizations that would later form the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN).
His body was allegedly clandestinely buried in a place known as El Playón, in the department of La Libertad, adjacent to San Salvador, the Salvadoran capital, without his remains having been rescued to date.
When asked if Dalton can be considered the best Salvadoran poet, Lindo Fuentes stated that “I am not in favor of making those rankings, but he is certainly a poet who has left a lasting work, which continues to be cited.”
He added: “That is the great test, it is not a fragile work, of the moment, but it is a work with permanence because it reflects on what it was like to be Salvadoran, on Salvadoran history and its resonance. And in all kinds of circles, it is something that indicates the quality and depth of your reflection.”
-The Salvadoran left has a problem in that case because they have not even handed over Dalton’s body – he was told.
“Definitely,” responded Lindo, who arrived in San Cristóbal in recent days to participate in the 2014 Central American Thought Forum Authoritarianisms and the Bukele Effect in Today’s Central America, organized by the Center for Multidisciplinary Research on Chiapas and the Southern Border (CIMSUR). , dependent on the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
