La Liga matches postponed due to flooding in the Valencia region

Madrid. The Spanish first division matches Valencia-Real Madrid and Villarreal-Rayo Vallecano, scheduled for this weekend, were postponed this Thursday at the request of La Liga to the Spanish Football Federation due to the floods that devastated the Valencia region.

The League also reported the postponement of the second division matches that were to take place in areas affected by the floods that have caused at least 95 deaths in the east of the country: Castellón-Ferrol, Eldense-Huesca and Levante-Málaga.

“In response to the request made yesterday Wednesday to the RFEF to postpone the matches on matchday 12 of LALIGA EA SPORTS and matchday 13 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION that were to be played in the Valencian Community during this weekend, LALIGA informs that the judge of Competition has ruled favorably on said request,” indicated the governing body of professional football in Spain.

The Spanish Federation (RFEF), for its part, announced the postponement of “the matches scheduled for this weekend in the Valencian Community (…) in professional and non-professional competitions, both in 11-a-side football and futsal.”

“Beyond the postponements, Spanish football wanted to show its solidarity with the people affected, especially with the relatives of those who have died in this natural disaster,” added the RFEF.

Undated

The Spanish Federation had already postponed the matches that Valencia and Levante were due to play this week in the Copa del Rey, a competition organized by the RFEF itself.

Real Madrid, the only one of the four teams competing in European competition this season, is second in the championship behind FC Barcelona, while Valencia is bottom.

The League called on the affected clubs to find new dates on which they can play the postponed matches.

The floods in the Valencia region, in eastern Spain, have caused at least 95 deaths and many missing people, in addition to extensive material damage. The Spanish government declared three days of mourning starting Thursday.

Before the start of the rest of the matches corresponding to date 12 of La Liga, as well as in the rest of the categories, a minute of silence will be observed.

According to the National Meteorological Agency of Spain, more than 300 liters of water per square meter fell on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday in several towns in the Valencian Community, with a peak of 491 liters in the small town of Chiva.

This balance, the highest in Spain since the floods that left 300 dead in October 1973, “is going to increase” due to the number of missing people, admitted on Wednesday night the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres.

The Valencian Community and the Spanish Mediterranean coast in general regularly suffer in the northern autumn the phenomenon of the “cold drop”, an isolated depression at high altitude that causes sudden and extremely violent rains.
