400 crochet hearts to hang in Cork city venue in memory of loved ones

Cork’s Nano Nagle Place Hosts First Annual Remembrance Ceremony

CORK, IRELAND – The inaugural remembrance ceremony honoring loved ones who have passed away took place today, November 1, in the serene gardens of Nano Nagle Place, located on Douglas Street in Cork city. This touching event is designed to provide solace and connection, embodying the spirit of community and remembrance that Nano Nagle Place promotes.

This morning’s ceremony featured a dedication where 400 handmade crochet hearts, crafted by women from the Lantern Community Project, were displayed on a tree in the garden. These hearts symbolize the memories of those now gone and are linked to names and remembrances shared in the memoriam section of the Nano Nagle Place website.

A Special Tribute

Sister Mary, Sister Margaret, and Sister Prena, the resident presentation sisters, blessed the remembrance tree, which stands as a poignant testament to collective grief and love. According to Nano Nagle Place, this magnolia tree serves as a “shared experience of love and loss that resonates with all who participate.”

Helen Geary, ministry manager at the Lantern Project, articulated the significance of this event, stating, “We invite friends from near and far to join this heartfelt tribute to loved ones who are gone but never forgotten. Our remembrance tree is a symbol of the deep connections that unite our global community, and we are honored to create this space of reflection and memory at Nano Nagle Place.”

The crochet hearts, created from vibrant yarn, offer a unique alternative to traditional memorials, such as plaques or benches, and serve as a personalized representation of the deceased. “Normally, when somebody passes, the main option is a mass card. This is our version of a mass card. Each of the crochet hearts has been made by participants of our centre who come here weekly,” Helen explained.

A Rich Tradition of Care

The Lantern Project, which supports around 20 participants and is inspired by Nano Nagle’s legacy of caring for those in need, underscores the importance of connection and remembrance within the community. In the 18th century, Nano Nagle was known as the "Lady of the Lantern," providing nighttime assistance to the poor and guiding herself through Cork’s unlit streets.

Helen revealed that the crochet initiative stems from a desire to create a meaningful way for people to remember their loved ones: “There are different ways of remembering people globally, and this initiative is a way of honoring requests for a meaningful ceremony.” Each crochet heart, while nameless, is connected to personal memories documented on the Nano Nagle Place website.

Community and Connection

Nano Nagle Place goes beyond remembrance; it is committed to fostering community well-being. The Lantern Project offers a variety of free health and wellness programs, with participation mainly from women in the local area. Offerings include crochet sessions, random acts of kindness, arts and crafts, theatre-making, gardening, and even mindfulness workshops.

“There’s a massive range of programmes here. We have really rich offerings and great connections with other organizations,” Helen stated. The project thrives on funding through grants, public donations, and corporate sponsorships, ensuring that they can continue to serve the community as they maintain their beautiful heritage site.

An Artistic and Inclusive Undertaking

The crochet hearts initiative not only aligns with the ethos of Nano Nagle Place, which promotes inclusivity and respect for past generations but also highlights the artistic nature of the organization. The gardens provide a peaceful retreat where visitors can connect with history and nature while enjoying the award-winning café situated on-site.

As the month of November progresses, the remembrance tree remains available for visitors wishing to pay their respects to loved ones. Whether or not you were able to attend today’s poignant ceremony, the display of hearts serves as an ongoing tribute throughout the month, inviting all to participate in a shared experience of reflection and solace.

Whether you have a personal experience with loss or are simply looking for a meaningful way to connect with your community, Nano Nagle Place offers a unique setting for remembrance and healing.

Engagement with the remembrance tree at Nano Nagle Place not only honors those who have passed but also fosters community and connection, reminding us all that memories live on.
