There are many characters with impressive designs in Star Wars, but one of the undisputed favorites among fans is Darth Maul. His appearance is one of the most recognizable in the entire franchise, although his final version arose from an unexpected change inspired by one of the most iconic antiheroes in comics.
In an interview at official Star Wars pagethe artist and designer of Darth Maul, Iain McCaigrevealed that, at first, the character was going to have an electrical circuit board on his face. However, the next day, one of his classmates proposed a change: replacing the circuits with symmetrical tattoos, something similar to the style of Rorschach.
“David Dozoretz literally had a circuit board in his face. By the time I got to our production designer, Gavin Bocquet, he had simplified the circuits to tattoos – probably channeling Rorschach from The Watchmen – and suddenly the design started to work. “.
According to McCaig, the creative team was unsure about Darth Maul’s initial design, but after adding his iconic symmetrical tattoos, the character’s creation progressed, and after several drawings and adjustments, the Sith we remember from was born. The Phantom Menace.
It is clear that reaching the final design of this character was not easy. According to McCaig, George Lucas only indicated that Darth Maul should be the new Sith, without specifying gender, race or complexion. Thus, the team had to manage to convince the filmmaker of the definitive appearance of this iconic villain.
