Artificial intelligence already generates a quarter of Google’s new code, Sundar Pichai said

Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, said that more than a quarter of the company’s new code is now created using artificial intelligence. This information was presented at the quarterly meeting with shareholders. As such, AI tools have a tangible impact on software development, increasing productivity and efficiency, which allows engineers to “do more, faster,” Pichai said.

The systems that generate the code are still under the control of developers who make sure they are correct, but the field of AI in programming is growing very quickly. Google is not the only company that is increasingly using AI algorithms to perform complex tasks. According to the 2024 Stack Overflow survey, more than 75% of developers are already using or plan to use AI in programming, and a GitHub survey found that 92% of US developers are using AI tools to write code.

An important question arises: how could this trend affect the knowledge and experience of programmers in the long run? As human involvement in coding decreases, so does the level of expertise required to resolve errors that AI algorithms may create. In theory, this could lead to a situation where humans cannot understand complex bugs that arise from multiple generations of AI code, creating a vicious cycle of complexity and confusion.

This is still a long way off, but progress in the use of AI for programming shows that this area will only improve.
