We might think it’s yet another joke on our friends Belgianexcept that this story is true. In Charleroi, in the Wallonia region, a company replaced the aging safety barriers on a bridge at the request of Walloon authorities. The work was indeed carried out… but on the wrong bridge!
The fault is due to the fact that the two buildings, located a few hundred meters from each other on the Brussels-Charleroi canal, are “almost identical”, reports Belgian public radio and television RTBF. As a result, the company made a mistake and replaced the guardrails on the bridge that belonged to the city, instead of doing so on the one that belongs to the region. “The dumpling comes from the company designated by the Region,” assures a municipal elected official from the city of Charleroi in charge of public works, whose comments were reported by RTBF.

In the end, the blunder was of little consequence since the safety barriers that were replaced also had to be changed. The city of Charleroi therefore benefited from a sort of boost. In return, the city should compensate the blundering company. “It’s quite normal that the municipality of Charleroi pays for work that benefits it,” believes the same municipal official. The municipal council must address this subject next Monday and could decide on the payment of 52,000 euros.
We hope she doesn’t choose the wrong company.
