Who would have thought? In the age of streaming and podcasts, AM/FM radio remains the king of the roads. A recent study from Edison Research has revealed that, despite the wide variety of entertainment options offered by our cars’ infotainment systems, such as Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, the majority of drivers still prefer to tune in to their favorite radio stations.

For those who are not familiar with these systems, both project a smartphone’s applications on the vehicle’s screen, allowing safe access while driving to various apps such as Spotify, Amazon Music, Deezer and YouTube Music.

However, among those who have this technology, only 19% use it, while 46% prefer to tune in to the radio. And among those who do not own these devices, 67% use the radio, 19% use Sirius MX and 18% use streaming platforms.

Why is the radio still the favorite option in the car?

There are several factors that explain this preference. One is simplicity and ease of use. The radio offers a simple and intuitive user experience. It doesn’t require complex setup or a steep learning curve and is safer to use while driving a car.

On the other hand, local radio offers a special connection with the community. By broadcasting news, events and programs relevant to a specific region, radio stations become a source of information and entertainment close to listeners. A connection that digital platforms cannot replicate.

And speaking of this closeness, listeners may tend to develop emotional associations with certain stations or programs. The familiar voice of an announcer, the background music and the characteristic sounds of a station can evoke specific emotions, creating a unique listening experience for each individual.

Let’s not forget that one of the greatest attractions of radio is its free nature. Unlike many streaming services that require a monthly subscription, traditional radio can be enjoyed at no cost. In addition, it does not consume mobile data, and works perfectly in areas with limited coverage.

But above all, radio has been part of many people’s lives for decades. Listening to the radio has become a habit for millions of people around the world. This ingrained habit, combined with the nostalgia it arouses, makes it difficult for many to give it up, even with the emergence of new technologies.

Radio, with its ability to connect with emotions and create community, continues to be an invaluable travel companion in an increasingly digital era.
