The top eight seeds are exempt from the first round, so world No. 2 Alcaraz appeared in the second round, defeating world No. 37 N. Jarry (Chile) in straight sets in his first match to advance to the third round. Humbert, on the other hand, advanced to the round of 16 by defeating B. Nakashima (USA), ranked 35th in the first round, and M. Gillon (USA), ranked 49th in the second round.
In the first set of the third round, Alcaraz was inconsistent in his service games, winning only 0% of points on his second serve, allowing two breaks and falling ahead.
In the second set, he continued to hold his service games, winning points with a high probability of 92% when he received the first serve, and did not let Humbert get a single break point, catching up to the set count of 1-1, but in the final set. Then, the service became unstable again, with three double faults. After allowing a break once, he was unable to create a single break chance and ran out of steam in 2 hours and 16 minutes.
Alcaraz’s comments were posted on the official ATP website of the Men’s Professional Tennis Association. He talked about the strength of Humbert, who was encouraged by the support of the local French team.
“I think I could have played better, but today, at my level, I think I gave it my all. I fought until the last point. I have to congratulate Hugo[Humbert]for his performance. I think it’s really high. The way he hits the ball is incredible. I feel like he’s improving every time he plays against me. He’s playing really high-level tennis. Especially in Paris. So I want to congratulate him and wish him the best.”
Before the tournament began, top seed J. Sinner (Italy) announced that he would be withdrawing from the tournament due to infection with the virus. With the loss of second seed Alcaraz in the third round, the top seed who made it to the final eight was third seed A. Zverev (Germany).
Humbert will face world No. 28 J. Thompson (Australia) in the quarterfinals. Thompson advanced by defeating A. Mannarino (France), who was ranked 58th and entered as a wild card (recommended by the organizer), in straight sets in the third round.
On the same day, Zverev, 8th seed G. Dimitrov (Bulgaria), 9th seed A. de Minaur (Australia), and 10th seed S. Tsitsipas (Greece) all made it to the final eight.
