Google seems to be preparing its big return to the world of mixed reality. Rumors say that Alphabet, Samsung and Qualcomm are working on glasses or a mixed reality headset. Although no release date has been announced, the Play Store is preparing: the store is adding new badges and mentions linked to an “XR headset”, a catch-all term designating both virtual reality and augmented reality.

The site Android Authority noticed something new in version 43.3.32-31 of Google Play. The code clearly mentions an “XR headset” in a line indicating whether an app is compatible or not. When installing an app, it is also possible to choose a “device” whose logo strongly evokes a product to be worn in front of your eyes. Things are quite clear, and it would not be surprising if Google launched a section of optimized Android apps on the day of the release of its headset or glasses.
On paper, Google already hosted VR apps back in the day you CardBoardbut this type of project has fallen out of favor now that real helmets are much more affordable. Google had a VR platform called Daydream, which it discreetly buried at the end of 2019. Its next headset with Qualcomm/Samsung should be presented by the end of the year, although details remain quite meager for the moment . The company would consider relaunching in the field of connected glasses with a project similar to Meta glasses, simpler to build and less expensive.
