(The Epoch Times, October 31, 2024) (Epoch Times reporter Li Haoyue) On Monday (October 28), a senior adviser to the Brazilian government said that Brazil has decided not to join the “Belt and Road ” Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping suggested one way”, but instead he will seek other ways to cooperate with Chinese investors.
The Brazilian government under Lula da Silva became the second BRICS country after India not to support the project.
According to Brazil’s O Globo, Celso Amorim, a special adviser to the Brazilian president on international affairs, announced that the government “intends to take relations with China (CCP) to a new level without signing contract”.
He explained that Brazil does not want to deal with China’s infrastructure and trade projects as an “insurance policy.”
The South China Morning Post quoted Amorim as saying the aim was to use part of the Belt and Road framework to find “synergies” between Brazilian infrastructure projects and investment funds linked to the initiative, without necessary to enter the enterprise formally.
China’s Belt and Road Initiative has been involved in debt trap disputes in many countries and is known as a tool to advance China’s geopolitical ambitions.
Amorim emphasized that Brazil has some priority infrastructure projects, and Brazil hopes that these projects will receive financial support. He also admitted that he was not sure whether Beijing would accept these projects and provide financial support.
This decision goes against the plans of the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP initially hoped that Brazil’s participation in the “Belt and Road Initiative” would become a central issue when Xi Jinping visited Brasilia on November 20. However, officials from the Ministry of Economy and Foreign Affairs in Brazil recently objected.
Last week, the United States urged Brazil to consider the dangers of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said Brazil should be careful about joining China’s initiative.
Initially the BRICS consisted of Russia, India, China and South Africa, and was later joined by Brazil. This year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates were admitted as new members.
As the first BRICS country to refuse to join the CCP initiative, India has been a strong critic of the Belt and Road Initiative and protested against China’s construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) through Pakistan controlled Kashmir while violating its sovereignty. .
Dr. Deepak Vohra, a former Indian diplomat to many countries, ambassador to Poland, and adviser to African governments, told The Epoch Times that the “Belt and Road Initiative” is the “big scam of the century.”
