The president of the United States, Joe Biden, this Saturday portrayed his predecessor and Republican candidate, Donald Trump, as the “enemy” of the unions, in an attempt to attract the union vote for the Democratic vice president, Kamala Harris, in the face of the November 5 elections.

Biden, who boasts of having been one of the best presidents for the working class in the history of the United States, gave a speech at a union center in Pittsburgh, a city with a long working-class tradition and located in the key state of Pennsylvania.

The president used especially harsh language when describing Trump as a billionaire who, during his career, has harmed workers and who, if he returns to the White House, will seek to favor big companies and hinder the work of unions.

“He is a loser as a candidate and, what is more important to me, and I am going to say it directly, he is a loser as a person,” Biden said.

Unions have traditionally been one of the largest voting grounds for Democrats, as these organizations tend to mobilize during elections to promote voting, generally in favor of Democratic candidates.

However, since Trump’s emergence onto the political scene in 2016, union support has weakened, partly shifting to the New York magnate, especially due to his populist measures on economic issues.

Proof of this is that in these elections, the influential American union Teamsters, which represents freight drivers and warehouse workers, will not support any presidential candidate for the first time in almost three decades.

Polls show Harris may be struggling to capture the vote of the working-class white base in states like Pennsylvania.

However, Biden is especially popular among this electorate for the actions he has taken on behalf of workers, becoming the first US president to join a picket line, and his middle-class origins in Scranton, al northeastern Pennsylvania, reinforce their connection with this group.

Therefore, with only ten days until the elections, Biden has decided to campaign for Harris in this group of voters. EFE
