Mexico. The Government of Mexico must facilitate the creation of more companies with a view to reducing informal employment, amid the opportunities offered by the relocation of global chains, the Center for Economic Studies of the Private Sector (CEESP) recommended today, Monday.
In its weekly economic analysis, the CEESP considered that relocation has put Mexico “in a privileged position worldwide,” but the country still has to improve several aspects on various fronts.
“It should be taken into consideration that relocation can generate important and lasting benefits for the entire population, as long as there is a solid rule of law environment, greater protection of property rights and a more developed financial system,” he noted.
In this scenario, facilitating the operation of companies and the creation of new ones is a requirement to make the most of the opportunities that the country currently has, he added.
The CEESP said that labor informality has become an alternative for a large number of people and companies looking for a source of income.
According to their analysis, in 2023 the informal economy generated almost a quarter of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), its highest percentage in at least the last 14 years.
“But its productivity is low, it employs more than half of the population and generates only a quarter of the country’s production,” he highlighted.
The CEESP recommended that the Mexican government create an environment that makes it easier for companies, new and already established, to participate in the formal sector of the economy, “in an environment of clear expectations of growth and survival.”
The private sector organization pointed out that Mexico’s main economic indicators confirm a lower dynamism in productive activity for 2024 and 2025.
The Mexican economy, the second largest in Latin America after Brazil, grew 3.2 percent in 2023, but the most recent analyst projections point to a slowdown this year to an expansion of 1.46 percent.
