It’s confirmed: Marlon Wayans has chosen the best holiday to emerge from the shadows and thrill fans of the saga Scary Movie. Just before Halloween, he announced that he and his brothers were taking over the reins of this cult franchise. Yes, Shawn, Marlon and Keenen Ivory Wayans, who orchestrated the first two parts to great success, are meeting again after 23 years to inject their energy into this sixth opus. Who else could take us back to these horror parodies that we love, if not those who gave birth to them in the 2000s?

And Scary Movie has generated nearly $896 million in five films, thanks to its offbeat humor and deliciously absurd references to cult horror films. Scream, The Blair Witch Project or even Remember… last summer : no classic of anxiety escaped their parodies, where laughter came to demolish anxiety, with improbable dialogues and eccentric characters. It is especially in the first opus, with stratospheric box office figures ($278 million for a budget of 19 million), that the saga forged a place in the pantheon of horror comedy.
The fall and rebirth of Scary Movie
The franchise has also experienced its dark hours. After two unforgettable films, the Wayans clashed with Harvey Weinstein, then boss of Miramax, who took control, pushing them towards the exit. The saga, deprived of its essence, continued with mixed results: critics and the public did not follow, and Scary Movie 5 is even harder to watch than to write. The glory days seemed well and truly over, but now the Wayans family is back, and they’re up for the challenge. Marlon confirmed on Instagram that he, Shawn and Keenen Ivory will write and produce this new chapter alongside Rick Alvarez, Wayans’ collaborator on comedies like White Chicks et Little Man.
Parodies galore… and a few surprises?
Even though the details of the plot are still unknown, one can easily imagine that this Scary Movie 6 will know how to exploit the windfall of recent reboots and modern horror franchises. With sagas like Scream, Beetlejuice et Alien revisited, and a massive return of slashers and haunted houses to cinema, the material is there to make this film a joyfully burlesque homage to the latest horror successes.
For this parody, it seems inevitable that Ghostface, an emblematic mask, will be there, recalling the first Scary Movie who, too, had attacked this character who had become cult. However, the return of this mythical mask will not prevent the Wayans from integrating other contemporary influences. In 2026, the supposed year of release, Scary Movie could well offer us a gallery of surprising cameos: stand-up stars like Kevin Hart could thus join the troupe, and we of course hope for a return of Regina Hall and Anna Faris, iconic figures of Cindy and Brenda, the unforgettable heroines of the early 2000s. Actress Anna Faris recently confided her desire to find Regina Hall, who, according to her, would be “the essential condition” for his return to the cast.
The Wayans brothers: from yesterday to today, a pop culture heritage
Pop culture owes a lot to the Wayans brothers, and they know it. While in 2025, Marlon will be on display in HIMpsychological thriller produced by Jordan Peele, and still on the road for its Wild Child Tourthis announcement reaffirms the aura of the Wayans clan. Their influence on horror comedy is immeasurable, and this return to the roots with Scary Movie 6 could well recall their creative genius while rewriting the history of parody in cinema.
