The return of an iconic It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia character in season 17 has been revealed via a new BTS photo. The long-running sitcom follows a group of friends who usually live in an Irish dive bar and are known for their bad behavior and bad personalities. Production on season 17 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia recently began, raising the possibility of it returning to FXX next year.
While the weather in Philadelphia continues as production continues, a new behind-the-scenes photo shared by David Hornsby via his personal Instagram account confirms that his longtime character Rickety Cricket will return in season 17. Check it out below below:
Appropriately captioned “Engaged SLUT Mode”, the photo shows Hornsby joined by various makeup artists as he undertakes the extensive transformation of his disheveled and decrepit character, complete with his “Slut” tattoo applied to his cheek. Hornsby also had a prosthetic scar applied to his left cheek, while artists looked at reference images to style his longer, matted and unkempt hair seen in previous seasons.
What Hornsby’s photo means for Rickety Cricket Season 17 status
Misery always follows when the cricket is with the gang
As seen with past seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the return of Rickety Cricket in season 17 guarantees more suffering for the character. After a brief absence, season 16 saw Cricket return as the cocaine-addicted leader of a male prostitution ring when he helped the gang track down the source of their recent misfortune.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: 5 Reasons Rickety Cricket is the Worst (& 5 Reasons It’s Liam McPoyle)
It’s Always Sunny is known for being a show about terrible people – but the worst has to be Liam and Cricket.
What remains to be seen, however, is exactly what state Cricket will be in when the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia characters cross paths with him again. Although he has fortunately not been marked significantly for several seasons, he has often carried the physical evidence of his lineage. As such, while Cricket may appear to retain his season 16 physical status like Hornsby, it may be too early to determine whether the show will be kinder to him.
Our take on the return of Rickety Cricket Season 17
Despite the main guest stars, the weather is still good and always guarantees the return of recurring characters
Rickety Cricket is a complicated figure in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Although some may find his story tragic, he is also the butt of jokes in most of his appearances. Each season pushes him a little further into depravity, seeing how much is too much for the character. It’s somehow both difficult to watch and absolutely hilarious, which fits well with It’s Always Sunny’s brand of comedy.
However, as Hornsby’s photo shows, Cricket may have at least found some stability between seasons for now. While it will be exciting to see the gang make new friends, with Always Sunny in Philadelphia hosting its first crossover episode with Abbott Elementary, it’s also a relief to see some familiar faces returning in the seventeenth season of the series. This demonstrates how the series remains true to its roots even as it continues, and that it knows what elements work best for its storytelling.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a sitcom and dark comedy created by Rob McElhenney. It stars Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton and Danny DeVito. The series follows a group of friends who own and frequent Irish bar Paddy’s Pub and get into all sorts of disturbing adventures.
