“Latvijas pasts” has issued a block of stamps in 3500 copies and 500 special envelopes dedicated to the high achievements of Latvian para-athletes at the Paris Paralympic Games. The nominal value of each stamp is 2.30 euros.
The design of the stamp was created by the artist Įrts Griva, and the author of the illustrations is Ausma Cīrulniece.
The stamp block shows three Paralympians from Latvia – Diana Krūmiņa, Aigars Apinis and Rihards Snikus. Krūmiņa became the Paralympic champion in javelin throw in Paris, Aigars Apinis won a silver medal in discus throw, and Rihards Snikus won two gold medals in para dressage with the horse “King of the Dance”.
The ceremonial opening took place today in the Saeima. Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa (ZZS), Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens (P), Head of the Sports Subcommittee of the Commission for Education, Culture and Science Dāvis Mārtiņš Daugavietis, President of the LPK Daiga Dadzīte, Head of the Latvian Delegation to the Paralympic Games in Paris Zane Skujiņa participated in the event together with other members of the Saeima Rubene and board member “Latvijas pasta” Pēteris Lauriņš.
The first day of stamps will be stamped until 18:00 at the Elizabetes Street post office, giving philately lovers the opportunity to get a special block of stamps with a first day stamp.
The Paris Paralympic Games were held between 28 August and 8 September, and around 4,400 para-athletes from 186 national Paralympic committees competed in them.
Latvia was represented at the Paris Paralympic Games by Apinis, Krūmiņa, Emīls Dzilna and Raivo Maksims (all athletics), Oskars Gailišs (cycling), Yuris Semyonovs (swimming), Margita Kanopka (shooting) and Snikus (Paralympic dressage).
Paralight athlete Edgars Bergs had also qualified for the Games, but refused to start in Paris due to health reasons.
