“As a consumer, everyone has the option to turn their back on an unhealthy product. This is exactly why the Federal Executive Board of the ÖDP has now decided to delete the account at X (formerly Twitter) on December 1st. Elon Musk‘s political statements, along with the increasingly inflammatory and hate-promoting activity on social media channel X, have brought us to this step. We refuse to support this type of communication and political direction any longer,” said ÖDP federal chairwoman Charlotte Schmid.
Under Musk’s leadership, not only has the content on called for participation in a strongly republican petition, caused outrage because it interfered in a problematic way with the democratic process of opinion formation and political participation. More and more users are turning away from X because they can no longer identify with the once popular channel.
“Other parties still use X because they apparently don’t want to lose their followers. But the federal executive board of the ÖDP sees it as an important task for all parties that describe themselves as democratic to support global democracy as much as possible. By withdrawing from
The ÖDP can still be found on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok and Vimeo, as well as on the newer channels Mastodon and Bluesky.
“We are very much looking forward to welcoming the followers who have remained loyal to us on X to these other channels in the future,” says Schmid.
