Flood protection in the valley floor between the Aare Gorge and Lake Brienz, which is at high risk of flooding, is to be improved. The Bernese government council has now applied for a loan of 6 million francs to the Grand Council to develop appropriate measures.

Flood damage has increased significantly in the Haslital over the past twenty years.

Flood damage is increasing

The existing protective measures are no longer sufficient, as the cantonal government announced in a communiqué on Thursday.

Between the Aare Gorge and Brienz, settlements, agricultural land, infrastructure such as roads, railways, the military airfield and supply lines should therefore be better protected from flooding, as it was said.

If the Grand Council approves the project, it will be implemented in several stages from 2030.

Project implementation planned from 2030

The communities affected are Schattenhalb, Meiringen, Brienzwiler, Hofstetten bei Brienz and Brienz. Public participation in the Hasliaare water construction plan runs until November 15th.

The flat valley floor in the Hasli was regularly flooded for centuries and was swamped over large areas. This prevented intensive agricultural use of the valley.

In the 19th century, the canton of Bern approved measures to channel the Hasliaare and drain the soil.

Historic fight against floods

However, floods in 1987, 2005, 2007 and 2011 made it clear that the protection in this form, which was over a century old, is no longer up-to-date and sufficient. There are also significant ecological deficits.
