The Orthodox Church celebrates today the feast of St. apps from the 70s: Stachy, Amplius, etc. St. mchk Epimachus. On Saturday, November 2, we will honor the dead with the big one Archangel’s memorial service. November 14th is the Christmas season, and the next day, November 15th, Christmas Lent begins.

The eternal mystique and fears created the Halloween holiday. One parable about this holiday tells about a drunkard farmer, but also a trickster, named Jack. Jack was used to drinking life in pubs with a cup in hand. One evening, on his way home, squirming and singing with a wide throat, he tripped over something and nearly fell. He bent down to look at the cursed fallen tree and suddenly saw that it was a human body with an ugly head and living, red and glowing eyes. Jack trembled, for he saw at once that he was standing before the devil, and that he was here and now to take his soul. Tutaxi sobered up and asked the ugly creature, before doing anything with him, to sit down like a human in a nearby pub and have a drink. The devil agreed.

They sat down and Jack came to and his mind clicked. He drank and thought of what he had to do. It was time to pay and the trickster sadly said he had no money. “You are a devil and you can do anything. Turn into a coin so we can lie to the innkeeper, and then you’ll get your shape back,” suggested the sober drunkard. Whether it was because he had been drinking or because you were gullible, he agreed. The moment it rolled onto the table like a coin, Jack pocketed it, where he wore a silver cross. And children know that if there is one thing devils fear and loathe, it is the cross. That’s how, Jack could now negotiate and agreed on another 10 years of life.

For 10 years, Jack came up with different ways to get rid of the skin again. He took it upon himself to apply one of them. When the devil appeared at the appointed time, the drunkard made one last wish to eat an apple from a nearby tree. He could not climb it, so the creature from hell jumped on the branches. And … oops, fell into the trap again. Jack hammered several crosses into the tree and captured the devil. This time it was negotiated wholesale. The farmer declared that he would let him go if the devil would give up forever the idea of putting him in hell. Whatever the creature could do, it also loved freedom, so it made a solemn promise and Jack pardoned it.

Time passed, the cunning Jack died anyway. His soul appeared in heaven, but St. Peter slammed the gates under his nose. Because the farmer had lived badly – apart from being a drunkard, he had also done many evils during his life. Then Jack went to hell, but the devil refused to let him go there either. “You can’t, I promised,” he told him happily. And so Jack was left wandering in the middle of nowhere. In order not to allow him to slip into any living body, on this day people disguise themselves hideously, and Jack trembles with terror and returns again to the vastness of nothingness. There he wanders with a carved turnip in his hands, in which a live coal glows. The merciful devil gave it to him because he knew that there are worse things than hell.
