Nicole Calif, a 22-year-old Guadeloupean students lives there and explains that she narrowly escaped death; she was in the car when the water rose very quickly.
She tells us about this terrible night.
It was horrible. We are starting to return to our normal lives, but it is a little difficult because there has been a lot of damage. Around 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., it was very hard. Me, around 7 p.m., I went to the dentist, so I had to return home with the car. I couldn’t even walk. I had to call my mother for help. There were people who couldn’t go home because there was a lot of water and we had to open our house for them to come home. There was a lot of current, it was impossible to walk down the street, there were cars everywhere. The water took all the cars. They were all stacked on top of each other, the bridges in the village, everything was destroyed, so it’s very difficult. Villages that had rivers were even more dangerous. They lost the house, there are houses that collapsed, the bridges, everything….
Very worried, Nicole’s father, who lives in Petit-Bourg, had not heard from his daughter since yesterday and was extremely worried about her.
