VW does not have an electric car suitable for the masses

Osnabrück (ots) –

According to the head of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Moritz Schularick, the extra tariffs against electric cars from China will not help Volkswagen out of the crisis. “The core problem at VW is that the group is unable to build a competitive electric car for the mass market,” said Schularick in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). Chinese manufacturers like BYD would remain cheaper than VW despite the additional tariffs. According to Schularick, what is much more important for the group is how e-mobility will develop in Germany.

At the same time, the economist welcomed the introduction of countervailing duties. The NOZ says Schularick: “For a long time, China has been promoting its industry up to nine times more than the Europeans.” Without the measure, there is a risk of competitive disadvantages for Europe, especially in future areas such as battery technology or electromobility. “We have to react,” warned Schularick.
