Knife attack in Dresden club: “Suddenly there was blood everywhere”

Freital/Dresden. Markus Wittenauer from Freital just wanted to spend a fun evening with his friends. Drink a few beers, maybe a short one, dance, flirt with women. But at the end of this evening he will end up in the hospital with a serious stab wound. Why did an unknown person attack him for no apparent reason at a party in a Dresden club? He doesn’t know that either.

Markus Wittenauer comes from Baden-Baden on the edge of the Black Forest and has only been living in Freital for five months. He moved here from the “Ländle” to work in the Hainsberg paper factory. Markus is 48 years old, the Swabian dialect comes through easily when he speaks, his body shows evidence of regular strength training, and his head is almost shaved bald. Visually, it’s not someone you want to mess with.

Drinking, dancing, getting to know women

This Saturday evening, October 19th, we’re scheduled to go to the Arteum club in Dresden’s Neustadt. There is an over 30 party there. Markus had already gotten tickets for himself and his two friends in advance. The group of men arrives at the establishment around 10 p.m. His fanny pack is not checked at the entrance, “which could also be because I created trust by willingly holding out the bag to the security guards.”

At first there isn’t much going on in the Arteum, so the friends go to the bar and check out the surroundings. In addition to drinking and dancing, there is a clear goal for the three single men this evening – to get to know women. So the group gets lost every now and then. The mood is good, the alcohol is flowing, Markus is having a good time. The men are far away from arguments or arguments, says the Freitaler afterwards.

“Two guys shouted at us because my friend pushed his way forward in the queue at the bar.” But it wasn’t worth mentioning. At around one o’clock Markus goes to the toilet and from there straight to the dance floor. Suddenly a woman next to him starts screaming and pointing at him. “I look down and suddenly there was blood everywhere.” It spurts out of his left hand. On him, on the dance floor, on other guests.

To me this is clearly an attempt to kill.

Markus’ friend immediately gets one of the security men, who takes the injured man outside and calls an ambulance. They press a tissue onto the heavily bleeding wound, which has cuts on the palm and back of the hand. In the hospital the wound is stitched and the doctors present a remarkable diagnosis. It was a 1.5 centimeter long knife wound that completely penetrated the hand.

Markus was attacked unnoticed between the toilet and the dance floor with a knife that pierced his hand. “For me this is clearly an attempt to kill,” says the Freitaler. Shortly before four o’clock on Sunday morning he left the hospital and on Monday he filed a criminal complaint against unknown people with the police.

On the trail of the perpetrator in a Dresden club

What initially went unnoticed for him – the jeans that Markus was wearing that evening have a hole above the left trouser pocket. At the same level he notices a small cut on his thigh. He often has his hand in his trouser pocket so that only his thumb disappears into it and the other fingers still stick out.

Based on his injuries and the hole in his pants, he could have been standing there exactly when the perpetrator attacked him with the knife. Maybe inconspicuously, casually, as you walk past. “I’m pretty sure that’s how it must have happened,” says Wittenauer. That would mean that the perpetrator had taken the risk of injuring him in the leg or stomach area.

Was the attack planned? Did the perpetrator know the 48-year-old? Could the crime have been done out of jealousy because Markus Wittenauer charmed the wrong woman at the party? “We were well received by a lot of girls,” says the Freitaler. Is the perpetrator perhaps even a woman who got into distress and anger because of the men’s troupe’s repeated attempts to excavate? Or was it an accident?

According to the police, there is currently no information on a possible perpetrator. “In this context, among other things, witness interviews are being carried out. There is currently no evidence of a suspect,” says police spokesman Marko Laske. When asked, Club Arteum did not comment on the events.

Wittenauer “definitely wants to sue the operator of the party.” In his opinion, the inadequate security precautions led to someone taking a knife to the event.

He also hopes that the police will now question his party friends as witnesses. According to their own statement, this has not yet happened, although they may have seen something important. According to Wittenauer, one of them saw an unknown male person leaving the club very quickly after the incident. She is said to have had blood-smeared hands.
