McDavid suffered the injury 37 seconds into the game which ended 6-1 in favor of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday evening.
McDavid tripped on Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski’s stick in his first shift of the game, and fell heavily against the railing.
He got up, took a few strides before returning to his team’s bench, signaling that something was wrong.
He returned to Edmonton after the game to undergo a battery of medical tests. The Oilers (4-5-1) continue their four-game road trip by facing the Predators in Nashville on Wednesday night, before completing their trip abroad by facing the Flames in Calgary on Sunday.
McDavid, a three-time NHL MVP and five-time Bettman scoring champion, has three goals and seven assists in 10 games this season.
