Dear Director,
this morning in your newspaper I read the new, the latest, yet another background story that concerns me. I know well that stemming the flood of rumors and indiscretions is a very difficult, if not impossible, practice, but I cannot continue to tolerate alleged reconstructions that have not the slightest contact with reality.
Today’s article attributes my family’s “disesteem” towards Giorgia Meloni and “discontent” with the actions of Antonio Tajani leading Forza Italia, when in both cases exactly the opposite is true. The Republic it even describes thoughts and plans that I do not have, nor have I ever had. It even goes so far as to distort the content of meetings that are part of my role and my work, transforming them into absurd carbon meetings that would hide science fiction political plots.
All very fascinating, I admit: almost intriguing. But also twenty thousand leagues away from the truth. Yes, the truth… In an age of fake news and uncontrollable chatter, does it still matter?
This is why I am writing to you, dear Editor: out of respect for the work you do and out of respect for your newspaper. Even before that, however, out of respect and for love of truth. Perhaps I will be stubborn, and I will certainly seem old-fashioned, but I continue to think that the reality of the facts retains value. And that “backstory” can only make sense when and if, from behind the stage, they describe a real scene. Not a theater – or rather a little theater – which doesn’t exist.
