New Apple hardware: iMac with M4 SoC introduced

When introducing the iMac 2024, Apple once again focused on comparing the speed of the new chip with the previous iMac generation. According to Apple, the M4 iMac is said to have “1.7 times” higher performance in everyday use and even 2.1 times the speed in games and demanding graphics applications such as image editing. However, the resourceful minds at Apple did not draw a comparison with the model that immediately preceded it.

The M4 iMac will be available in two versions: one with an 8-core CPU and an 8-core graphics processor, 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of configurable onboard storage. There will also be a 10-core variant with 32 GB of RAM that offers support for external monitors at 8K and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, while the base model allows the connection of up to two 6K monitors at 60 Hz.

Apple emphasized the 16-core neural engine in the chip, which is said to work up to six times faster in machine learning applications. The iMac will also be equipped with Apple Intelligence AI features introduced with macOS Sequoia 15.1, iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1.

Nothing has changed externally compared to the M3 chip iMac, but there are now new, more intense color variants to choose from: yellow, pink, orange, blue, silver, green and purple. The 24-inch 4.5K Retina display remains, but there is now the option for a nano-texture glass panel that reduces light reflections.

The computer also offers an upgraded center stage camera with 12 MP and desk view mode. There are also up to 4 USB-C Thunderbolt ports, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. The speaker system with 6 speakers known from last year remains.
