Mumps is an infectious disease caused by a virus, particularly affecting children.
The Head of Infectious Disease Control (P2M) and Immunization for Yogyakarta City Health Service, Endang Sri Rahayu, revealed that there were about 169 cases of pneumonia in Yogyakarta City, most of them primary school children.
Endang said that lumps are characterized by swelling around the jaw or neck as a result of inflammation in the parotid gland.
Initial symptoms include fever, headache, pain when chewing or swallowing, and muscle pain.
“This disease is transmitted very easily, especially in school environments, through spraying saliva or contact with contaminated materials,” explained Endang when he was interviewed, Wednesday (30/10).
For this reason, the Yogyakarta City Health Service has issued an appeal to schools and parents to increase awareness.
“Victims tend to lack hygiene and this disease is transmitted very easily. “Because of that, our advice to those who are sick is that they should not go to school,” he said.
He said parents should make sure their children are vaccinated against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR). “The MMR vaccine can prevent complications,” he said.
