/ world today news/ The Head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP Petar Vitanov and 12 other MEPs issued a call to the American President Joe Biden, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the members of the European Parliament. With it, they support the request of world scientists for a 6-month moratorium on the development of artificial intelligence and insist on a high-level meeting between the US and Europe. Their call is related to the preemptive actions of technology companies and the risks to human rights.
“Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have shown that the rate of technological progress is faster and more unpredictable than policymakers have predicted. We are moving very quickly,” the MEPs warn.
The European Parliament is working on the Artificial Intelligence Act, a regulation designed to support the development and uptake of reliable, human-centric artificial intelligence in Europe, which must at the same time protect people’s health, safety and fundamental rights, in line with European values, they remind
“As policy makers, we still have negotiations to do. We are aware that this regulation, which will cover the entire EU market, can serve as a blueprint for other regulatory initiatives in different regulatory traditions and environments around the world. The recent emergence and widespread public access to powerful artificial intelligence trained to generate complex content has made us pause and reflect on our work,” the MEPs also say.
They are calling on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden to convene a high-level global meeting to discuss all the challenges surrounding the development, control and deployment of powerful artificial intelligence.
“Our message to industry, researchers and decision-makers in Europe and around the world is that artificial intelligence should be developed carefully. Together we can steer history in the right direction,” the MEPs also wrote.
The appeal by Petar Vitanov and his colleagues follows an open letter initiated by the Future of Life Institute, which was signed by hundreds of scientists, experts and business leaders. It calls for a 6-month moratorium on the development of powerful artificial intelligence. Systems with human and competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research and recognized by reliable laboratories. Artificial intelligence could cause a profound change in the history of life on Earth and must be planned and managed with commensurate care and resources, scientists believe.
The signatory of the letter, Petar Vitanov, is actively involved in legislation related to artificial intelligence as a shadow rapporteur. MEPs are working on regulations that should control the development of artificial intelligence so that it does not threaten basic human and civil rights.
