Fulda (pm/gü) – Many people are familiar with frequent back pain. But instead of protecting your back, the best recommendation is: exercise more and stay active. As part of the doctor-patient seminar on Wednesday, November 6th, at 5 p.m. in the foyer of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Fulda, Dr. med. Bernd Hölper, specialist in neurosurgery from the Fulda-Main-Kinzig Spine Center, on the topic that affects many: back health.
Back pain and lack of exercise have a negative impact on each other. If you sit too much or move too little, your muscles will weaken or cramp. Studies show that regular physical activity can help relieve back pain. The spine experts know: Active people stay mobile and fit longer, suffer less from back pain and have a lower risk of osteoporosis. Those who exercise regularly can also significantly reduce the frequency of pain attacks.
Many people fear that exercise could cause further damage to their back. But when it comes to non-specific back and intervertebral disc problems, the opposite is the case: exercise promotes blood circulation, relieves tension and reduces stress, which can also be a factor in back pain. Above all, exercises to strengthen and stabilize the core muscles help. But lighter activities such as walking or Nordic walking can also reduce back pain. These gentle sports are good for strengthening the back muscles, promoting mobility, protecting the joints and contributing to general well-being. This is the goal today because everyone wants to stay active and mobile well into old age. Good fitness and trained body muscles are the basis for a good quality of life and the best protection against pain.
If conservative measures such as targeted exercise and physiotherapy are not sufficient and neurological deficits or severe chronic pain occur, surgery may be necessary in some cases. Here too, progressive technical developments mean that there are gentle, modern and movement-preserving surgical techniques for both the cervical and lumbar spine.
As part of the doctor-patient seminar, Hölper presents various diseases of the spine and explains the underlying causes. At the same time, he discusses modern care concepts and describes conservative and minimally invasive surgical forms of therapy for freedom from pain and sustainable freedom of movement in all phases of life. After the event, the expert will be available to answer questions and discuss further. Anyone interested is cordially invited to the free event.
