Ukraine plans to transfer 160,000 people to fill the ranks of its army, the secretary of the country’s National Security and Defense Council, Oleksandr Litvinenko, told Verkhovna Rada lawmakers today, according to a video of his speech released by another lawmaker, AFP reported. BTA reported.
Since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, “a total of 1.050 million citizens have been drafted into the army,” Litvinenko told lawmakers behind closed doors. “There are plans to transfer another 160,000 people,” which would fill the ranks of the army to 85 percent, he said.
Another wave of movement will be organized in the next three months – a time when Ukraine today extended martial law and movement, a security source told AFP. Ukraine has declared martial law and general mobilization since the start of the Russian invasion and has been regularly extended for 90 days.
The parliament of Ukraine voted today for a new extension of the term by 90 days – from the beginning of November to the beginning of February, reports the website of the institution. Ukrainian authorities do not usually reveal to the public the size of their armed forces or their mobilization plans, and they rarely report casualties.
In late February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that 31,000 Ukrainian servicemen had died so far. However, this number does not include the soldiers who were lost, and it is estimated that the number is several tens of thousands. The number of wounded, which is usually a multiple of the number of dead in a given armed conflict, has never been made public.
The Ukrainian army is struggling to replenish its ranks after an almost three-year offensive, while the situation on the front is dire and the Russian army has been on the campaign for around year. Migration is a highly controversial topic, and the permit system is seen by many Ukrainians as unfair and has been at the center of several corruption scandals, according to AFP .
