Jayson Tatum continued the celebration of Boston’s 18th pennant by scoring 37 points and making eight of the 29 three-pointers for the Celtics, who tied the NBA record on Tuesday and opened the season by beating the New York Knicks 132-109.
Derrick White scored 24 points, Jaylen Brown added 23 and Tatum had 10 assists for the defending champions, who raised their 18th championship banner before the game. Boston led by as many as 35 points before missing its final 13 3-point attempts while attempting to break the record.
Jalen Brunson scored 22 points for New York, and Dominican Karl-Anthony Towns, the team’s newest acquisition, had 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Celtics led by more than 20 points early in the third quarter when the TD Garden crowd’s attention turned from basketball to baseball. Many fans began chanting “The Yankees stink!”
This week, the New York Yankees, hated rivals of the Boston Red Sox, will begin facing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
