The court in Plovdiv heard again all the parties in the case against the mother and her boyfriend, who systematically abused a 5-year-old child. The stepfather, Petar Chernev, refused to admit that he abused the boy and asked to be released.

Initially, Chernev pleaded guilty to receive a 1/3 reduced sentence. Today, however, he changed his strategy and asked instead of the abbreviated procedure, that the case be heard with the questioning of witnesses and knowledge.

“We have pleaded guilty to some bodily harm. We will appeal for a fair sentence based on what is determined as the level of guilt,” said Yordan Dafchev, the defendant’s lawyer.

Petar Chernev’s father insists that the case was a domestic accident and denies that it was his son who caused the child’s moderate physical injury. “He hit him with someone else’s slap right on the chin. There are also two slaps on the face in the case. The injury is from hot water. It’s not him, it’s the mother,” said Anton Chernev, father of the accused.

The prosecutor’s office has filed six charges against Chernev and is seeking 10 years in prison. “For the threat of domestic violence, coercion of domestic violence, possession of drugs, torture and persistent minor physical harm in situations of domestic violence,” said lead prosecutor Dimitar Kostov.
