This year there was a vote online and in person to determine who would be the athlete and team of the year 2024 in Kaufbeuren: And the winners are: Mona Weber, weightlifter from the Kaufbeuren Athletic Club, Joel Kaiser, track and field athlete from Lebenshilfe Ostallgäu/Kaufbeuren , as well as the Lebenshilfe running team (season 2).
Voting online and by a jury
The honorary titles were chosen from a nomination list. On the one hand, there was the possibility of online voting and, on the other hand, voting by a five-member jury with Pascal Lechler (city councilor and sports representative), Hanna Rieger (city councilor), Karin Dängel (sports teacher at the Sophie La Roche School), Nadine Forster (district chairwoman of the regional association). Youth/BSJ) and Stefan Günter (district chairman of the BLSV). The candidates and winners were presented and honored at a ceremony in the city theater.
Thorsten Friedrich, Chairman of Kaufbeuren Tourism and City Marketing, moderated the event, which was impressively and smoothly organized by Melis Karakus, responsible for schools and sports in the city administration. Friedrich recalled the major sporting events of the recent past such as the European handball and football championships, the Tour de France and the Olympic Games in Paris with the “gigantic opening ceremony”.
The march of the city delegation was less gigantic, but all the more pleasant, when the jury and Kaufbeuren’s mayor Stefan Bosse conquered the stage of the city theater. It was reserved for the head of the town hall to open the ceremony and present certificates, trophies and gifts. Bosse was impressed by the variety of sports practiced within the Wertachstadt, which are practiced regardless of age and gender.
Usain Bolt and Christiano Ronaldo in sight
This makes a significant contribution to increasing the attractiveness of a community. The tangible and audible looseness of the sports honor in the city theater was reinforced by members of the Bruck Gymnasium theater group Moskitos, who in Intermezzi satirized the sportsmanship and behavior of Usain Bolt and Cristiano Ronaldo. In contrast, Simon of the Mosquitoes was thought-provoking. He described the dark side of the good and bad heroes of sports, when you can’t realize your dreams, have to fall down and get back up again, or have to settle for second or last place. This is also a heroism that you can grow from. That’s why he’s committed to it and believes in heroism in sport.
The result of the city cycling has been determined
In addition, the results of this year’s and now sixth city cycling event were announced. The number of kilometers cycled was counted between June 17th and July 7th. A total of 1,146 cyclists covered a distance of 215,292 kilometers. The Jakob Brugger Gymnasium school team proved to be particularly keen on cycling with 30,319 kilometers and 179 participants. In the individual ranking, city council member Paul Meichelböck impressed as a true two-wheeler enthusiast, driving 2,359 kilometers for the ADFC.
In Germany, Kaufbeuren came in 267th place out of 2,864 participating municipalities; in a Bavaria-wide comparison, the city came in 49th place out of 532 participating municipalities.
