In March this year, the VREG expected a 23 percent increase in network rates in 2025, or an average of 82 euros more per year. The increase is now even higher. As an explanation, the regulator refers to the Flemish budget where “no compensation is provided to compensate some of the costs incurred by the operators of the distribution system for purchasing green energy certificates for the minimum support. “
However, the main explanation for higher network rates lies in the significant increase in Elia‘s transmission network rates. These make up about half of the increase, he feels. The third explanation lies in the higher interest rates on the financial markets and the investments required in the distribution network in the context of the energy transition.
On the other hand, the network rates on the natural gas bill would be almost constant in 2025. The VREG allows a reduction of 2 percent.
The final amounts must wait until December, when the VREG has approved the tariff proposals of the distribution system operators. Network operators are legally challenging the 2025-2028 tariff approach, as they believe the revenue is insufficient to cover their costs. In the coming years, billions will be invested in the electricity grid as part of the energy transition.
