Extreme weather is increasingly causing serious damage to homes. A current study by the Bauherren-Schutzbund eV (BSB) shows: Almost every property in Germany can be affected by unpredictable weather events. However, many buildings are currently not adequately prepared for this. Builders and property owners should therefore take action now to avoid damage.
The BSB advises all homeowners to check their buildings for vulnerabilities and take protective measures. Erik Stange, press spokesman for the BSB, explains: “Many homeowners underestimate the dangers that extreme weather events bring with them. Foresighted action is now required.” Regular inspections of roofs, facades, windows and drainage systems are particularly important. Are there loose roof tiles or clogged rain pipes? These components are particularly susceptible to damage from heavy rain or storms. “If you check your house for weak points in a timely manner, you can avoid expensive repairs after storms,” says Stange.
Check weather forecasts regularly
A first step is to learn about weather risks. For example, in regions that are frequently affected by heavy rain, particular care should be taken to ensure that the drainage systems are sufficiently dimensioned and functional. In order to be able to react urgently, it is also advisable to keep an eye on weather forecasts and severe weather warnings.
And prevention is important: It is recommended to use storm-proof materials, install additional anchors or secure the roof with storm clips. Strong drainage systems can help make the property more resilient to extreme weather.
In addition, having the right insurance coverage is crucial. Many homeowners have building insurance, but it does not always cover all damage. The BSB recommends checking whether the insurance cover also includes natural damage.
The need to take action as an owner is supported by current study results. According to a study by the BSB and the Institute for Building Research eV, it is shown that the costs for storm damage have risen sharply: compared to the 1980s, they have tripled. Not only rain and storms, but also heat and dryness can cause building damage. Long dry periods often cause cracks in the subsoil or walls.
The BSB advises homeowners on the selection of individually tailored protective measures: “With a combination of structural precautions, the right insurance cover and support from experts, owners can better prepare their property for extreme weather,” emphasizes Stange.
