Two lines were interrupted Tuesday evening. The Winnipeg Jets lost for the first time this season, while the San Jose Sharks recorded their first win of the season.
Alexander Wennberg gave the San Jose Sharks their first win of the season with a power play goal at 1:26 of overtime, beating Utah Hockey Club 5-4.
Fabian Zetterlund scored twice and Mikael Granlund and Tyler Toffoli also contributed goals. Mackenzie Blackwood finished the game with 19 saves.
For the Utah Hockey Club, Matias Maccelli was the top scorer of the game with two goals, while Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev scored the other goals. Connor Ingram saved 41 shots, but Utah still suffered its fourth straight loss.
The Sharks came back after trailing by three goals late in the third period. Toffoli tied it with just 2:42 left in regulation, while Zetterlund and Granlund scored within 25 seconds of each other shortly before to spark the Sharks’ impressive comeback.
Nikolaj Ehlers contributed significantly to the Jets’ attack, but it was not enough to guarantee the victory of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who prevailed 6-4, inflicting the Jets’ first defeat of the season.
Ehlers demonstrated his strength on the ice, especially with his speed and creativity, and created several chances for Winnipeg. The Dane was credited with an assist for the Candies’ 4-5 goal.
Winnipeg had opened the season with an eight-game winning streak and was the last undefeated team in the NHL, but today it wasn’t enough against Toronto’s strong defense.
Kyle Connor had three goals and an assist, while Mark Scheifele also scored, but it wasn’t enough to edge the Maple Leafs, who saw John Tavares put three shots past Connor Hellebuyck in the Jets’ goal.
Mikael Pyyhtia scored his first NHL goal and the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-1 for their second straight home win.
Sean Monahan contributed two goals, Cole Sillinger one goal and two assists. Elvis Merzlikins kept a clean record until the 19:33 mark of the third period, when he conceded a goal, but blocked 31 shots throughout the game. Mattias Ekholm scored the only goal for the Oilers, while Stuart Skinner made 19 saves.
The Oilers lost their star Connor McDavid to a lower-body injury just 37 seconds before kickoff.
